Als die Anthropologin Hortense Powdermaker 1950 ihre ethnografische Studie zur US-amerikanischen Filmindustrie veröffentlichte, übernahm sie im Buchtitel eine Selbstbeschreibung ihres Untersuchungsgegenstands: Hollywood, The Dream Factory. Powdermakers immer noch sehr lesenswerte Pionierstudie hat nichts von ihrer lakonischen Präzision und analytischen Originalität eingebüßt. In mokantem Tonfall werden nicht nur bezüglich des Feldzugangs mutmaßlich transhistorische Allgemeingültigkeiten serviert: «Hollywood people made excellent interviewees for a number of reasons. The level of frustration was high, and frustrated people love to talk. [...]. But the most important reason for being able to get data is one that underlies success in any field work, whether in primitive or modern societies: all human beings love to talk about themselves and are flattered at having their opinions taken seriously.» (6)
